Samsung Galaxy S4 Active finally unveiled

It has been talked about for weeks and even (allegedly) caught on camera too, but only now has the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active had an official launch.

A fairly low key launch too, no big Samsung event showcase for the rugged Galaxy, which is perhaps the biggest surprise here. Oh yes, we said rugged, but this isn't one of those chunky builders' phones. It keeps a reasonably slim profile, whilst still being able to withstand dust and water, the latter for 30 minutes in depths of up to one metre.

Under that fairly tough exterior is a 1.9GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot, with the handset also offering up a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution LCD display, a 2,600mAh battery and an 8-megapixel camera. Not just any camera though. This one has an 'Aqua Mode' for better quality underwater photos and video. Although simply working under water probably makes it better than most.

Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 is the OS, working alongside Samsung's own interface and the company's latest tricks and apps. The much talked-about Group Play is here, naturally. LTE here too, so there's a chance someone could sneak this onto a 4G network when it lands this summer, in a choice of Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare. Yes, those really are the colour options.

No fixed details about the UK launch as yet, but we can't see us being too far behind the initial summer rollout.
