Waterproof LG Optimus GJ launches

Sony has been touting waterproof phones of late, but it isn't going to have  the sector all to itself. Not if LG has anything to do with it.

The handset maker has just announced the LG Optimus GJ in Taiwan, a waterproof (rather than simply splashproof) handset, offering both IXP5 and IPX7 certification. So if you plan on spending part of summer having some japes around a pool, it might be a phone to seek out.

It's not a bad looking handset either, with the features being pretty decent too. That includes a 4.7-inch IPS display with 1280 x 720 resolution, which is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass, along with a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 2GB RAM. You also get 16GB of storage which can be boosted up to 62GB via microSD, a 2280mAh battery, a 13-megapixel camera on the back (which can also shoot 1080p video), and a 1.3-megapixel networking camera, with Android 4.1 covering the OS.

No word on a launch outside of Taiwan as yet, but there's no reason (technically) why the Optimus GJ couldn't roll out worldwide. With waterproof phones being a popular call right now, it could be a shrewd move for LG.
