If you want the big screen phone but don't want the price tag to match, you might want to check out the Huawei Ascend Mate. The phone was first spotted back in late 2012, but we only managed to get hands-on with it at the start of 2013 at the CES event. At the time, we were pretty impressed with the phablet. With a reasonable price, that appeal has just gone up a little more. The Ascend Mate has a pretty decent specification, with a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 2GB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera and Android 4.1 for the OS. That 6.1-inch screen too, with 1,280x720 pixel resolution, which we found 'fantastically crisp and colourful' during the hands-on.Certainly good value SIM-free for £335, which is the price being charged at Expansys right now as a pre-order. Compared to the slightly larger (but less powerful) Samsung Galaxy Mega, which was announced for the UK yesterday for £459.99, it looks a bargain. If you order, stock is expected at the retailer in a matter of days in black.
