BlackBerry Q5 likely to be a £20 per month handset

It had an official launch earlier this week, with a presumption that the BlackBerry Q5 would be one of the cheaper BlackBerry 10 phones. Now we know it will.

The QWERTY smartphone is said to be available on contracts of around £20 per month. Who says so? Rob Orr, BlackBerry's UK managing director, says so. He confirmed that it will be available on 'the kind of £20 odd per month tariff', adding that 'the Q5 is a huge opportunity in the consumer world'.

That's probably not far from the truth. BlackBerry and especially BBM has a strong following at the younger end of the market and so far, this is the part of the market BlackBerry hasn't touched with BB 10 so far. The Q5 will cover it.

Mind you, the handset itself isn't set up as a high-end device with a 3.1-inch touchscreen display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4G connectivity, 8GB of internal storage and 2GB RAM, but it looks, on paper, better than a £20 smartphone.

We'll find out which networks are offering it from July, when it will be available in a colour choice of pink, white and red.
