Asus could launch Nexus 7-style tablet with Windows

It looks like Microsoft will soon be taking aim at the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini, helped along by a 7-inch tablet from Asus.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Asus CEO Jerry Shen has confirmed that W8 tablets are likely to come in below $300 (£194) and appear some time this year, giving Microsoft's operating system a way into the budget market. The current smallest devices for Windows 8 tablets is at the 10-inch mark, which includes the Asus VivoTab.

'We're very optimistic about sales for Windows 8 tablets this year,' said Shen to the newspaper. With a budget model in the works, it should be.

It seems that it's not the only company going down this road though. Microsoft has long been rumoured to be producing its own Surface 7 tablet and a leaked set of product images for an Acer tablet have also appeared on the Amazon site.

That's a slightly larger 8.1-inch device, said to host a dual-core 1.8GHz Intel Atom processor, 2GB RAM, and a 1280 x 800 resolution display, according to the leaked specs. The listing has been pulled, but not before the device, down as the Acer W3-810, was spotted with a price tag of $379.99 (£246).

Yes, it looks like a new front is opening up in the smaller tablet market. At least, that's what Microsoft will be hoping.
