Image of alleged budget iPhone appears online

The idea of a budget iPhone has been a running theme for months, if not years. But the rumours did come to a head in January, when the Wall Street Journal effectively 'confirmed' it. But not much has been heard between then and now.

But now we have what is believed to be an image of the budget phone, as well as a specification. The image comes from the Tactus site, which shows a plastic phone looking not unlike the iPod classic with a flat back and curved edges, with longer volume buttons along the left side.

The image doesn't tell us much more, but the report associated with the image does. According to that, the budget iPhone will feature an A5 chip, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and five color options of black, white, blue, red, and yellow. It will also feature a 3.5-inch Retina display rather than the 4-inch display on the current iPhone 5.

Finally, there's a price and date. the launch is said to be4 planned for 15 October, with the price the equivalent of $300, but you might want to take that bit with a pinch of salt.

It's all rumour so far, but this is the strongest hint yet of just what Apple will offer at the lower end of the market. Whether it gets a launch in the UK is a different thing altogether. It might just be marketed in developing markets, but we'll find out more about that at the official launch.
