Twitter Music readied for iOS launch

Twitter has been busy in the background readying a new service, with Twitter Music possibly launching in a matter of weeks.

The basis for the new service is the music discovery service We Are Hunted, pictured above and acquired by Twitter last year. It will be rebranded as Twitter Music and launched on the iOS platform at the end of the month. According to CNET, it will offer music recommendations based on who you follow on the main Twitter site (amongst other factors) and when the music is found, it will stream via SoundCloud.

According to those initial reports, the app will have the Twitter branding and will use four tabs - Suggested for recommendations, Now Playing to see what your friends are listening to, Popular showing trends and Emerging highlighting up and coming acts.

All of which sounds quite appealing. However, with Spotify very much top of the pile when it comes to music discovery (and Spotify playlists being shared via Twitter already), you wonder whether this standalone app will really have mass appeal.

Saying that, you'll be able to sign into the new app with your existing Twitter login details and it's fair to say that a good number of Twitter uses will want to try it, even if that's purely out of curiosity. If even just a small percentage stay, that's still a healthy audience.
