Next-generation Windows Phone coming at the end of 2013

Other updates might arrive before this date, but Christmas 2013 is the approximate timing for the next major update of the Windows Phone platform.

Who says so? Microsoft says so. At least, a job ad posted on its site says so.

The job of 'Software Development Engineer in Test - Windows Phone' is detailed in its requirements, but adds, rather helpfully, at the end that: 'This is a great time to join as we’re completing our current release are getting ready for our next release targeting the holiday of this year.'

So there you have it, new WP as you tuck into the turkey (or vegetarian alternative). But other updates will arrive before the major platform overhaul. Microsoft has already delivered the General Distribution Release 1 (GDR1) update and as we mentioned last week, the HTC Tiara is rumoured to be launching at the start of summer, said to be running GDR2. So expect that software update around then.

Saying that, we don't yet know just what that will entail. There's also a rumour of GDR3 too, which is even more vague. The bottom line is that updates are coming to WP8 as the year progresses, but probably with fairly modest tweaks. The big changes are still some time off.
