MWC 2013: Asus reveals the Fonepad phone/tablet
Rivalling Samsung's Galaxy Note, the Asus Fonepad is a 7-inch 3G tablet...

As well as the Padfone Infinity, Asus launched its new seven-inch ‘Fonepad’ today at MWC 2013. Billed as “the incredible fusion of phone and tablet”, the Fonepad is basically a compact tablet that can also take 3G calls – kind of similar to the Galaxy Note devices.

It’s a slick-looking machine, with either a Titanium Gray or Champagne Blue finish. Micro SD and SIM card slots are hidden beneath a flap at the top of the device, keeping the curved edges neat and tidy. Dual mics help to cancel out external noise when taking calls.

The 1.2MP front-facing camera and 3MP rear-facing camera will take basic photos, and the Fonepad comes with 16GB of storage for your photos and other media.

That 7-inch IPS display packs a reasonably sharp 1280 x 800, similar to devices such as the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8.0. An Intel Atom Z2420 processor runs the show, which gives 31 hours of battery life for 3G calls apparently, as well as ten hours of battery life with general use.

The Asus fonepad starts at $249 US, available in March. The EU version will cost €219, available in April.
