MWC 2013: Huawei launches Ascend P2 smartphone
'World's Fastest Smartphone' enjoys speedy 4G connectivity

Although MWC doesn’t officially kick off until Monday, Huawei snuck in early by cheekily hosting its massive flagship smartphone launch on Sunday afternoon. The 4.7-inch Huawei Ascend P2 is the follow-up to last year’s Ascend P1, and another great value mobile. It boasts a quad-core processor and 13MP camera at a price that won’t have your bank manager sending ‘round the boys.

Huawei is billing the Ascend P2 as the ‘world’s fastest smartphone’, but it’s nothing to do with the zippy 1.5GHz quad-core processor. Instead, it’s a reference to the LTE Category 4 support, which theoretically means the Ascend P2 can use 4G to download data at speeds up to 150Mbps. Of course, those kinds of speeds will only be achieved if the planets are perfectly aligned, but Huawei’s new flagship phone should still load up websites in a heartbeat and stream music and video with no pesky buffering.

The Huawei Ascend P2 is nicely designed, with a slender 8.4mm body that curves at both ends. The 4.7-inch screen rocks a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, not far off the newly-announced Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, but still lagging behind Sony’s Xperia Z. You also get a 13MP rear-facing camera (with dedicated shutter button on the edge of the phone) plus a 1.3MP front-facer for Skype chats. All of this is wrapped up in a funky Android 4.1 Jelly Bean package, with Huawei’s custom ‘Emotion’ interface.

Expect to see the Huawei Ascend P2 in the UK before summer. The European price tag of €399 should translate to roughly £350. We'll be grabbing a full hands-on preview very soon...
