BlackBerry Z10 is company's best-ever UK launch

All that hype around the latest BlackBerry relaunch? Looks like it might have paid off, judging by comments from BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins.

Blackberry's boss claims that the launch in the UK and indeed, its native Canada, have been the best launches the company has ever seen. Yes, even better than the days when a BlackBerry was in the hand of every upwardly mobile business man or woman in the country.

'In Canada, yesterday was the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone. In fact, it was more than 50% better than any other launch day in our history in Canada,' BlackBerry's CEO said in a statement. 'In the UK, we have seen close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone.'

Annoyingly, the company has avoided giving out any sales numbers from the initial period, but is obviously happy. Earlier in the week, there were reports of strong demand and some sell-outs for the device in retail stores, which seems to back up the initial optimism. Saying that, one of the stores claiming to have sold out (Phones 4U) seems to still have stock left. Some investigations by the Mobile News site indicated that the white phone (the alleged sold out phone) was still in stock. One if its retail outlets claimed it has 'loads left'. Make your own mind up on that one.

Even allowing for that, it seems sales are still strong for a BlackBerry launch. Will it be maintained? We'll only know that when the P&L reports land for the quarter. Initial demand might well be from BlackBerry's loyal fan base and if that's the case, demand might slow down after the first few weeks.

But with the BlackBerry Q10 up its sleeve, the company might well be able to sustain that demand just a little longer. If you fancy a Z10, check out our initial thoughts on the smartphone here.
