Nokia phones get Windows 7.8

The software is shipping on more recent models (like the Nokia Lumia 510), but as of this week, Windows Phone 7.8 is rolling out to other Lumia phones currently running on Windows Phone 7.5.

After 'extensive software testing', update notifications will begin to appear for the Nokia Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 and 900, just as long as you have an unlocked phone or 'operator approved software' during February. It might not be straight away, as the rollout will take a few weeks, but you'll get a message telling you when it's ready for your phone.

When you get it, connect your phone to your computer via Zune for PC, or the Windows Phone app for Mac, and follow the onscreen instructions to upgrade. There's an instructional video on the Nokia site if you aren't sure what to do.

There are new and improved features to enjoy when you do upgrade from both Nokia and Microsoft, including internet sharing, Bluetooth sharing, imaging enhancements like Camera Extras and the release of apps such as Contact Share, Play To and Nokia City Lens from Nokia itself.

Once you get the Windows update, you'll also get an enhanced start screen, with the option to resize tiles, new options for your lock screen and increased language support, for example.

All of that for free, of course.
