HTC's budget Desire U smartphone launches

Thought we had heard the last of HTC's Desire brand? Think again, as the Desire U is an all-new addition to the range.

Don't get get too excited though. Whereas the Desire name once headed up the HTC range, right now it looks like it has been relegated to the budget end of the spectrum. If you want premium, you'll have to wait for the launch of the much-expected HTC M7, which should launch in a matter of weeks.

Not that we know how much the HTC Desire U will cost, but a quick look at the specification for the new launch tells us pretty much everything we need to know.

We're talking Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for the operating system for a start, along with a 4-inch 800 x 480 (WVGA) display, a single-core 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB of storage, a microSD slot and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. Beats Audio is also here, as is 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

The colour options are black and white and the initial markets are China and Taiwan. We'll have to wait and see if HTC fancies letting us in on this budget newbie. If it does, the price is expected to be fairly modest.
