Sony Xperia Z tablet officially announced

That was quick. On Friday, we heard it was launching this week, but barely into the new week the Sony Xperia Z tablet has been unveiled.

As expected it has a 'look' not dissimilar to the previously-launched Sony Xperia Z smartphone, though it is obviously considerably larger than that device. It's also a different story once you get under the bonnet, so to speak.

We are talking a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, a 10.1-inch 1,920 x 1,200 screen, complete with Mobile Bravia Engine 2, an 8.1-megapixel Exmor R camera, NFC, LTE, microSD expansion and Sony's S-Force virtual surround sound technology. Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) is the operating system.

All of that in a tablet that's just 6.9mm-thick and 495g in weight. As predicted by those initial reports, the tablet is both waterproof and dustproof too - hopefully without the problems which held back the previous Sony Tablet S.

No news on price or UK availability as yet, but that should follow in due course. Perhaps when the UK Sony peeps get through the snow and near a desk.
