iPhone 5S handset leaks online

Ok, this could be a hoax or crossed wires. But if it's true, this is your first look at the upcoming iPhone 5S.

Yes, that's right, Apple could be planning an upgraded iPhone just a few months after the last one was shown off to the world's press. It wouldn't be a complete surprise. We heard last month that a new iPhone was to go into production 'soon'. That was 'soon' in November, so parts could already be in production.

Talking of production, something like 50,000-100,000 was said to be the target initially, with serious production due to start in the first quarter of 2013. The reason for the redesign is difficulty producing volume for the current phone, which indicates a slight redesign rather than a reinvention.

The latest shots back that up. They were spotted by French forum Nowhereelse.fr, showing a phone largely unchanged in profile, but some changes inside. Different screw placement for example, which point to a different inner configuration.

We know, not exactly exciting on the face of it. But the underlying theme certainly is. A new iPhone, which is likely to appear in the first half of 2013. The Samsung Galaxy S IV might well find itself in a battle next year, as Apple looks to be upping its refresh cycle to six months.
