Details of budget Asus tablet leak online

There has been talk about a budget Asus tablet for some time, a tablet likely to undercut the Asus-made Google Nexus 7 considerably. Now details of an upcoming tablet have leaked online, which could be that very device.

The leaks previously tagged the budget tablet as the Asus ME-172V. This benchmark test lists the tablet as the Asus ME172V, which is likely to be the same product. The specification does bear that out too. This is no iPad beater, mini or not.

According to the benchmark, it has a 7-inch screen with 1,024x552-pixel resolution, with a processor somewhere between 600MHz and 1,008MHz. Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean will be the operating system, which is a selling point no matter what the price.

On a tablet said to be selling for just over £60? That's serious value. It also makes the tablet and the Android platform accessible to a much wider group of people and might convince people who perhaps aren't obvious buyers to stump up the rather modest cash.

That is, of course, if Asus choose to launch it in the UK. At that price, you do wonder if the company is looking at developing markets. which are so far untouched by the tablet boom. We're hoping that's not the case and Asus will unleash this tablet globally, turning the market on its head as a result.
