Windows Phone 7.8 launch confirmed by Microsoft

Well, word on the street was a launch of the updated operating system yesterday. Late yesterday, Microsoft did indeed confirm the rollout of Windows Phone 7.8. But that confirmation was a date, not the actual OS.

A couple of rumours had pinpointed an actual rollout, both from an anonymous tip off and a previous report out of a Microsoft conference in the Far East. Seems wires were a little crossed.

Microsoft has now come out to confirm that the update to Windows Phone 7.5 will be here in early 2013. That's as accurate as it gets. Better than nothing, but not as good as a launch yesterday, obviously.

When it arrives, there will be new features, creating 'a completely new phone', according to Microsoft on its official blog. It also mentioned some specifics, including resizable Live Tiles, double the number of theme and accent colours (up to 20), the option to automatically display the Bing Picture of the Day plus the ‘A1B2C3’ PIN/password challenge to prevent accidental device wipes on phones connected to Exchange accounts.

New apps will also be coming - Words with Friends and Draw Something are already available, while Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Star Wars are said to be on the way.

Early 2013 is only a matter of weeks away, so not long to go. When it does arrive, sounds like it will be worth the wait.
