The iPhone has finally been knocked off its perch, with the Samsung Galaxy S III now the word's bestselling smartphone. But don't expect it to last.18 million units of the Galaxy S III were shipped during the third quarter of 2012, compared to 16.2 million of the iPhone 4S. According to new research from the Country Share Tracker of Strategy Analytics, the S III now has 11 per cent of the global smartphone market, compared to 9.7 per cent for the iPhone 4S. But that was then, this is now. Since then, Apple has produced the iPhone 5 and the resultant sales of that model will undoubtedly have an impact on the next set of sales figures. In addition, saw the iPhone 5 launched in that period, it has probably cost Apple first place by taking sales away from the iPhone 4S with its 6 million unit sales. So a success for Samsung, but a qualified one.On the flipside, Samsung has diversified its own Galaxy range too, so it might be interesting to see the Galaxy v iPhone figure overall as we enter 2013. One thing is for sure, the two brands are top of the tree now and will likely stay ahead of the pack for quite some time yet.
