Samsung Galaxy Camera confirmed for the UK

Regular readers might recall the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Camera back at the IFA event in August. A strange hybrid, it mixed compact camera with Android device and as such, divided opinion between those who thought it was an act of genius and others who viewed it as utterly pointless. If you are in the former camp, you'll be pleased to know it is all set for UK shelves.

In fact, the Samsung Galaxy Camera is here from Thursday 8 November generally, with some early sales on 7 November from 5pm at the flagship Samsung store if you really can't wait to get snapping. Either way, you'll have to be clutching £399 to secure one.

Simon Stanford, Vice President, Telecommunications & Networks Division, Samsung UK and Ireland comments: 'The initial response to the Galaxy Camera has been amazing and we are really looking forward to offering our customers a completely new type of digital photography device. The Galaxy Camera is a fantastic example of our continued passion for innovation and we are excited to be evolving our Galaxy range even further.'

So Samsung is convinced about its potential, are you? You might be persuaded when you hear it has a 21x optical zoom lens and a 16-megapixel rear-illuminated CMOS sensor, with wide-angle shots also possible thanks to the 23mm aperture lens and HD video shooting also good to go.

But that's only half the story. The device also comes with what's described as the 'world's largest and most vivid camera display', a 121.2mm HD Super Clear Touch Display. That also doubles up as a screen for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, with the whole thing powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core processor. Impressive stuff. Of course, you can edit images on the screen, as well as downloading apps, checking your email, browsing the web and anything else you would do on a smartphone. Except making calls obviously. That would turn it into a smartphone!

We got up-close to it at IFA, with our initial report on the Samsung Galaxy Camera found here. If it convinces you to buy, it will be across the high street, notably at Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4u and Jessops, in choices of Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and 3G. Of course, if you opt for the latter, you'll need a data contract to take full advantage of its connectivity.
