Twitter to introduce Instagram-like filters

Facebook might now have Instagram, but Twitter could soon have a rival product, working as part of the Twitter service.

That's according to the New York Times, which claims that Twitter is looking to update its mobile apps with filters, which will allow you to add some period or retro tweaks to shots taken on your phone's camera. Rather like Instagram. It's a great idea. In fact, you wonder why it hasn't been thought of earlier. Twitter obviously isn't commenting on the speculation, but then again, why would it?

The decision has apparently been hastened by Facebook buying into Instagram. Initially the company looked at buying a service to rival Instagram, but executives decided that 'the price tags were not worth the goods', prompting Twitter to develop its own.

Twitter has also noted that its high-profile Twitter users also post a number of Instagram shots. Keeping them onsite will almost certainly boost traffic and advertising revenues. That's the bottom line.

It's just one of a number of planned additions to the mobile service, with Twitter also looking at video editing and uploading, which would, of course, cut YouTube out of the mix.

No details of just when these enhanced apps will be launched, but it's now likely to be sometime in 2013.
