Google announces Android event for 29 October

Pat on the back for Le Figaro, the newspaper having predicted a Google event for 29 October, which is likely to be focused on the Nexus smartphone. Fast forward a week and Google has confirmed that very thing.

Google's invites have gone out for an event in New York, with the message: 'The playground is open'. Play is likely to refer to the Google Play store, which means we'll see new hardware from the company. But the product set for launch still open to debate.

Google might show off the 32GB Nexus 7 (despite it being outed by Argos), but more likely, it will show off a Nexus phone, maybe even multiple handsets. Almost certain to appear is the phone known as the LG Nexus 4, which is said to be packing a Qualcomm 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chip, 2GB RAM, a 1280x768 True-HD IPS screen and an 8-megapixel camera. It might come with another new launch, Android 4.2, but is more likely to showcase Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Time will tell on that one.

If we are talking multiple phones, there's a chance we could see the Sony Nexus S and a version of the HTC J Butterfly, possibly reworked as a Google phone. Some time back, there were rumours of Google launching multiple Nexus phones, but it's not clear whether the company will produce a clutch of new phones on the same day or stagger releases. A Google Nexus 10 is also an outside bet, but that's unlikely just yet.

We will know for sure late in the day on 29 October, with all the news passed on to you as soon as we have it.
