BlackBerry Playbook updated to OS 2.1

It's still very much a niche product, but the BlackBerry PlayBook has kept on going as other tablets have fallen by the wayside. Perhaps that's because RIM has produced regular updates for the operating system, which help to keep it on the right side of current. Another one has just landed, taking it to OS 2.1.

It's not a massive change, but there are a number of improvements that will be welcomed by PlayBook owners. First up, BlackBerry Bridge has been updated, allowing you to view, respond and compose new SMS messages on a PlayBook when connected to a BlackBerry smartphone over Bluetooth. You’ll also see increased performance and speed of other Bridge functions as well.

Email has also been enhanced, with portrait support for email, calendar and contacts, giving you the option to use your tablet in either orientation to message for the first time. There is also improved Android Application Support, which includes multi-window applications, camera support and in-app payments. Lots of minor improvements for business users too, headed up by the option to separate your work from personal data and an update to the Print to Go app is also included.

If that all sounds good and you have a PlayBook, you should automatically receive a software update notification on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet status ribbon, or you can check for the software update at any time by going to the settings menu under 'Software Updates' and tapping 'Check for Updates'. Just follow the instructions after that.
