Virgin Media could be lining up a 4G network

Another network could soon be confirming 4G coverage, with Virgin Media said to be in talks about offering its own service.

The hub of all the action is once again the EE network, the joint 4G venture of Orange and T-Mobile. Three has previously confirmed access to the same network, launching at some point next year. Now Virgin Media, which also uses the company's infrastructure, is looking to do something along the same lines.

'4G will play an important part in meeting the growing demand for wireless capacity,' said Virgin Media in a statement. 'Launching 4G services this year promises to bring significant benefits to UK consumers as people begin to make the most of forthcoming superfast mobile connections.'

If all goes to plan, it could mean Virgin Media getting in on 4G ahead of big guns like O2 and Vodafone, who are looking to set up networks on different frequencies next year. With Virgin having access to the 'cleared' 1,800GHz frequency, it means it can potentially offer the same 4G smartphones as EE, which could mean the likes of the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III LTE hitting Virgin with superfast speeds.

More to come on this, although we suspect the Virgin service isn't going to launch until well into 2013, possibly around the same time as the Three 4G offering.
