Apple refreshes the iPod touch

Not just a new iPhone 5 on the market, Apple has also updated the iPod touch, with the phone-less iPhone now looking a very tasty proposition.

It actually treads a similar path to the iPhone 5, also boasting a new slim profile (6.1mm thin), an anodised aluminium body and four-inch Retina display. There's a dual-core A5 chip inside, delivering up to twice the processing power and up to seven times faster graphics than the fourth generation iPod touch but maintaining the battery life of up to 40 hours of music playback and eight hours of video playback.

Also here is a five-megapixel iSight camera with auto-focus, support for 1080p video recording with video image stabilisation, face detection and an LED flash, and a new panorama feature that lets you capture extended shots by simply moving the camera across a scene. There's also the new iPod touch loop, a clever wrist strap you can use while taking photos, recording video and playing games, as well as the same EarPod headphones you get with the new iPhone.

iOS 6 is here from the off, as is Siri, so you can ask away to your heart's content. You'll get a bigger range of answers too, as the new Siri has support for more languages, access to sports scores, restaurant recommendations and movie listings, for example.

It will be available in pink, yellow, blue, white and silver, black and slate, selling for £249 for the 16GB version and £329 for the 32GB model. Pre-orders start on 14 September and deliveries start in October.
