Amazon Kindle Fire HD and new Kindle Fire head to UK
07 Sep 2012
Available to pre-order now, priced from £129
Amazon is back in the budget tablet game and entering the UK market for the first time with the Kindle Fire HD and a new (or updated) Kindle Fire tablet.
As expected, both run on a customised Android platform, the Kindle Fire HD's version said to be based on Ice Cream Sandwich. There's also promoted access to all of Amazon's products, including the recently-launched Amazon Appstore. A new version of Whispersync has also launched, which means you'll be able to continue the gaming fun on a different device, as well as bounce between audio and textbooks, should you be splitting time between the car and the lounge. X-Ray for Books and Movies is also here, which is essentially background for your media. The Movies version is based around IMDb, which should give you an idea about the kind of information available.
Hardware-wise, the Kindle Fire HD, which is perhaps the big news here, is offered as a seven-inch or 8.9-inch device, although the larger tablet isn't coming to the UK yet. You suspect that's down to stock issues. Just in case it does land at some point, the difference between the two is the screen size and resolution, with the seven-inch model offering a 1280x800 resolution. It also has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Dolby Digital Plus sound via stereo speakers, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. a front-facing camera, up to 11 hours of battery life, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI-out.
In the UK, the 16GB model will retail at £159, with the larger 32GB model yours for £199, stacking up well against its obvious competition, the Nexus 7 by Asus. Get in quick though, as stock is limited.
If £159 is a bit pricey, Amazon has a budget option, going by the name of the Amazon Kindle fire. Yes, that Kindle Fire, the one we've been waiting a year for. Except it has had a bit of a refresh. The original Fire now comes with a 1.2GHz processor and 1GB RAM (double the original amount), a seven-inch 1024x600-pixel resolution IPS display and a front-facing camera, which works with a customised version of the Skype app.
This one comes with 8GB of storage and is available in the UK for £129. Again, while stocks last. Delivery is expected in October for both models.
