Three Nokia Windows Phone 8 devices set for launch

Credit to both Nokia and Microsoft for keeping details of the new range of Windows Phone 8 handsets under wraps for some time. But it looks like the cracks are finally starting to appear, just a couple of weeks before the Nokia Lumia press event.

That event is scheduled for 5 September, with the expectation of a new set of Lumia phones to take us into 2013. It now seems likely that we will see at least two and possibly three handsets on that day. In fact, two of the phones are already being talked about.

The first mutterings come from Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, who has spoken to Russian site about Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 range, confirming details of a phone called the Nokia Phi. If those details are to be believed, the Windows Phone 8 device is a 4.7-inch handset with an AMOLED screen, a microSD slot (a first for the Lumia range) and a design that is slimmer than the Lumia 800 or 900.

He also added that it was one of three devices, all of which would be unveiled on that September date, coming to market in October.

Hot on the heels of that came a report from The Verge, confirming the Nokia Arrow and Phi, both of which are working names, not official monikers. Details remain scarce though, with the site claiming the Phi will feature a large curved glass display and polycarbonate body, while the Arrow will be a mid-range handset.

To cap things off, an early prototype illustration of the Phi leaked late last night with a brief specification. In this case, the Phi was said to offer a 4.7-inch curved display, polycarbonate design, dual-core processor, external SD card slot, as well as NFC support. It is also said to be the successor to the Nokia Lumia 800 and 900.

The floodgates seem to have opened. With a couple of weeks to go, we suspect this is only the beginning of the leaks ahead of the event. It really wouldn't surprise us to see a hands-on before next week is out.
