HTC Proto makes an online appearance
Android smartphone could take over from the HTC One V

I think it's fair to say that HTC will not be launching a new phone called the Proto. But this is said to be a future launch, possibly as soon as next week.

As we mentioned yesterday (24 August), HTC is finding things a little tougher these days and is rumoured to be looking at price cuts to boost sales. If that's the case, the Proto could be our first opportunity to see that policy in action.

As for the phone, it's said to be a follow-on (possibly replacement) for the HTC One V, which got a decent review off us earlier this year.

Saying that, the leaked device doesn't look a lot like the One V and with very little in the way of specification, it's hard to do a compare and contrast as yet. What we have so far is a four-inch WVGA display, five-megapixel camera and a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, all packed into a 9.62mm-thick shell.

HTC will have products on show at IFA, so there's every chance this will launch, possibly as part of a new range of handsets rather than a solitary issue, adding to what is already looking like a very crowded schedule.
