Still no sign of a UK launch, but perhaps all that could change in a couple of weeks, when Amazon holds a high profile press event. That event is scheduled for 6 September, with Amazon being fairly tight-lipped about just what will come from it. But this is Amazon, and there has been long-running speculation about a refresh of the Kindle Fire tablet, so we can assume that will be covered. If the rumours are right, the Santa Monica event could see an upgrade to the standard seven-inch tablet, as Amazon looks to take on the Google Nexus 7 and (we suspect) the iPad Mini. But there is also an expectation of a larger device, a 10-inch tablet with an improved design, quad-core processor, front-facing camera, Micro USB port, and possibly an HDMI-out port. What we do know for sure is that Amazon really needs to do something significant. The Kindle Fire was a huge success at launch, but sales have gradually slowed down and the competition in the tablet market has never been stronger. Obviously, the one way of boosting sales would be to bring the device out of the US and push it worldwide. We are holding out some hope that Amazon could announce a Kindle Fire for the UK, but there is no evidence of it happening as yet, with no 'mirror' press event scheduled for these shores. We live in hope though, with confirmation one way or another in a matter of days.
