Vodafone Smart II Tate Edition launches

How do you turn a budget Android phone into a desirable item? Well, in the case of the Vodafone Smart II Tate Edition, you get an artist to work on it, then sell the smartphone exclusively at Harrods. Job done.

There are just 1,000 of the phones available, which also throws exclusivity into the mix. Each of those has has been designed by 19-year-old artist Gaby Sahhar, one of a group of young creative artists known as the Tate Collective. Just think, if Gaby makes it big, this could be a seriously valuable piece of art in years to come.

Vodafone chose Gaby's 'electric' design for the back cover after running a competition with a number of artists. But this arty phone isn't being sold at a premium, despite its potential collectibility and high-end retailer.

If you make your way up to the Harrods' tech floor, you'll be asked for £70 on a pay-as-you-go deal, which seems like a decent offer to us. Of course, it's still a budget Android with a 3.2-inch touch-screen, 3.15-megapixel camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity plus Android 2.3 Gingerbread. So if you want more on the tech side, we suggest you look elsewhere. If you want to read a review of the original, you will find one here.
