Sony Xperia SL breaks cover

The Sony Xperia S was only launched at the turn of the year, so is it too soon to talk about a successor? Apparently not, as Sony has one in the pipeline, going by the name of the Sony Xperia SL.

We are presuming it's a follow-up as the Xperia SL sounds not a million miles from the original, with just a bump in the specification. It certainly doesn't look all that different, judging by the images that have broken overnight.

The main (confirmed) difference so far is the presence of the dual-core, 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 processor, which is a step up from the current chip and from the 1.5GHz CPU initially reported to be on this phone.

The launch date will perhaps dictate the version of Android on the Xperia SL. If it launches soon, Ice Cream Sandwich will almost certainly be on here. Further down the line, and it's likely to be Jelly Bean.

More details are likely to slip out over the coming weeks, but if you have the original Xperia S, it doesn't sound like you'll be all that desperate to update to this one on the evidence so far. Especially if Sony pushes through a Jelly Bean update for the original phone.
