Sony Xperia tablet details leak

The IFA event just got a little more exciting with news of a Sony Xperia tablet.

Actually, that's not the all-new tablet the name suggests. Sony has merely updated its original Tablet S and taken the Xperia name. It makes sense, being a mobile device. How do we know all this? Well, some slides have leaked, showing off key details of the new device, and taking away much of the element of surprise Sony probably wanted in the process.

We now know the new tablet will be slimmer, made of aluminium and splash-proof, which makes it perfect for some time by the pool. It's just a shame the launch misses the summer holidays. Also noted is a 9.4-inch LCD display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the OS (which might be upgraded to Jelly Bean in time) along with a Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.

Other notable features include cloud storage for music, videos and photos and a Guest Mode, which means your personal stuff is protected when others use your tablet. Not that you have anything to hide, obviously.

Music, videos, cloud photo storage, PlayStation games and ebooks will all be accessible on the tablet via the Sony Entertainment Network, with ebooks also available from the Reader Store.

If you’re willing to let a friend use your tablet but don’t wish them to have access to all your contents, then the 'Guest Mode' enables you to limit what applications are displayed and can be used. Interestingly, the cover sounds a little like the Microsoft Surface, doubling up as a stand and a keyboard.

Pricing for the US is listed, pitched at $449.99 for the 16GB model, $549.99 for the 32GB model and $649.99 for the 64GB version. UK pricing will presumably come with the official launch, which will be at the end of this month.
