Sony was flashing three new Xperia smartphones at its 'Christmas in July' showcase today: the Xperia Go, Xperia Tipo and Xperia Miro. Considering how much we loved the Sony Xperia S and the rest of the Xperia family, we were pretty darn excited.
Sony Xperia Go
The 3.5-inch Xperia Go has just been released here in the good ol' UK, and should appeal to ham-fisted users thanks to its impressive durability. Like the Motorola Defy Plus (and Defy Mini), the Xperia Go can survive a trip down the toilet thanks to its waterproof design, yet still looks the works with its typically Sony styling. Even better, the screen still responds perfectly when damp, even if your fingers are soaked – as you can see here.
The Xperia Go is just 9.8mm thick and 110g, so even those with tiny pockets or handbags should love it. A 1GHz dual-core processor powers your apps and games, which should give smooth performance, while a five-megapixel camera rounds off the specs. Sadly you're lumbered with Android Gingerbread instead of Ice Cream Sandwich, but Sony is (finally) rolling out Android 4.0 to its Xperia phones, so we're hopeful an update will come soon.
Sony Xperia Miro
Sony's Xperia Miro has a similar design and feel to the Sony Xperia Go, with more basic specs. It's a 3.5-inch Android Ice Cream Sandwich device, packing in a five-megapixel camera like the Xperia Go, but a single-core 800MHz processor that's more suited for basic use (texting, emailing etc). It's reasonably slim and feels light in the hand, with a bright, colourful screen.
Expect the Xperia Miro in Q3 2012.
Sony Xperia Tipo
The Xperia Tipo is aimed at first-time smartphone users, which we decipher as 'delivers basic performance with a friendly interface and a low cost'. As with the Xperia Miro, you get a single-core 800MHz processor and an even dinkier 3.2-inch screen, as well as a 3.2-megapixel camera. However, a special dual-SIM version of the Tipo will also be available, in case you wish to use a single phone for both home and work.
We like the rounded design, which contrasts against the rectangular finish of most other Xperia phones. It'll come in red, white, black and blue on launch.
Like the Xperia Miro, expect the Xperia Tipo to hit the UK in Q3 2012
