Amazon Appstore confirmed for Europe

We heard a rumour about it, but now it's been confirmed that the Amazon Appstore is heading to Europe. Which of course, includes the UK.

The company has invited developers to submit apps for its European store, which will launch in Germany, France, Italy and Spain, as well as in the UK, pushing further afield at a later date.

Jim Adkins, VP of the Amazon Appstore, said: 'We’re excited to open the door to even more opportunity by expanding app sales outside the US. We see tremendous potential for current developers in our distribution program to grow with the international expansion. We also encourage new developers to join and participate in the platform’s growth.'

In practical terms, it should mean more choice for Android users (with competition for the Google Play site), as well as features like one-click buying and Test Drive, which allows you to test an app before committing to it.

Something missing? Of course, the arrival of the Kindle Fire tablet. That could still happen, although you do wonder if Amazon will hold back and wait until the launch of its next-gen tablets, which are rumoured for later this year. We'll let you know about that as soon as we hear anything.
