Images of new iPhone 5 emerge

The launch might well be months away, but images of the new iPhone 5 have started to appear online. At least, that's what the shots claim to be.

9to5 Mac has the images, the one here showing the back panels of both the black and white version of Apple's new smartphone, both made out of metal, with the metal antenna band moulded into the backplates. That's likely to form the basis of a unibody casing, making the new device thinner and lighter than previous iPhones.

The images also show some features from the new iPhone, including the much talked-about smaller dock connector, along with an earphone jack in the bottom corner of the device, redesigned speaker grills and a new opening between the camera lens and the LED flash – possibly for a second microphone.

Other components caught on camera indicate Apple is sticking with a Home button and that the phone is the same width as current models, but longer in length. Again, as rumoured previously.

Not a lot about the inner workings of the phone can be deduced from the shots, but an improved processor and LTE connectivity (for those who can get coverage) are expected, as well as the improved iOS 6 operating system.

The finished item could launch next month at the WWDC event, but autumn is more likely.
