BlackBerry 7.1 software now available in the UK

Yesterday we heard that BlackBerry 10 isn't coming to existing BlackBerry smartphones, but now we have some good news - BlackBerry 7.1 is here.

By 'here', we mean in the UK, as long as you have the right model of phone, which is any of the Bold 9900, Torch 9810 and 9860 and Curve 9360 and 9380 smartphones. Got one of those? Good, because you'll find much to love in this update.

First up, the update brings mobile Wi-Fi hotspot technology to the BlackBerry, which means you can turn your phone into a hotspot, spreading the data love to up to five devices. Yes, that kind of thing has been on other platforms for quite some time, but it hasn't been on the BlackBerry, which is why it's such a big deal.

On top of that, the BlackBerry Tag tool is here, which brings near field communication (NFC) capabilities to smartphones and allows information, pictures and documents to be shared just by touching two devices together. RIM has also included a new Battery Saving Mode feature that (surprise surprise) improves the battery life of the devices. Just set your phone to automatically switch to adjusted power settings, which can reduce the brightness level and backlight timeout settings, as well as shutting down the mobile hotspot functionality after a set time.

Finally, if you have a  Curve 9360 or 9380 smartphone, you will find an FM radio application on your phone after the update, which gives access to local FM radio stations without requiring access to data services.

You can get it either as an 'over the air' update or through the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
