Ice Cream Sandwich hits SIM-free Galaxy S II phones

Good news for owners of SIM-free Samsung Galaxy S II smartphones – your update to Ice Cream Sandwich is ready to go.

That's slightly ahead of the schedule originally offered by Samsung, which had the SIM-free update to follow all the networks. But in a statement on Twitter, Samsung said:

'Samsung UK has been working as hard as possible over the last few weeks to get Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) rolled out to all our Galaxy S II customers. We can confirm that ‘XEU/SIM-free’ and all network upgrades are now complete except for Orange and T-Mobile, which will follow as soon as possible, pending software testing and approvals. Thanks again for your patience.'

So if you have a SIM-free phone, hook up to the desktop client and you should, hopefully, have the long-awaited update. On the flipside, it's not great news for Orange and T-Mobile customers, who still have to wait for the latest version of Android. 'Software testing and approvals' is a very general phrase and pretty much covers the entire testing work that the networks are undertaking.

With no word from either of those networks, we're fearing the worst in terms of time. Although we suspect Samsung is on their case on your behalf too. The Korean giant will want this particular update putting to bed as soon as possible.
