Sony commences Ice Cream Sandwich rollout

The company released a beta for developers in February, but today, Sony is finally starting its rollout of Ice Cream Sandwich for its general users.

The company had mentioned the end of March/early April for ICS, so it is almost on track, although we're not sure when the UK will be blessed with the 4.0 update. According to Sony's official blog, the first of those updates will be for customers in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Norway and via a PC or Mac, not over-the-air.

Not for all phones either. The Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray are the only phones confirmed for an upgrade right now, with users in those territories getting the enhanced operating system over the next four to six weeks. After that is complete, Sony will make it available in 'other global markets', offering a schedule of where and when on the same Sony blog when information becomes available.

In terms of other models, the Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, Xperia Active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will get an updating starting from late May into the end of June. Again, that's likely to be a phased rollout.

As soon as we hear those UK dates, we'll let you know. Although exact timing is, as ever, likely to depend on your network.
