Nokia Lumia phones to get free TV app

Fancy watching some TV for 'free' on your Nokia Lumia phone? That could be about to happen very soon.

A Russian Windows Phone 7 forum has obtained details of the upcoming app, as well as screenshots to go with it. While they don't quite tell the whole story, they do give out a lot of information. For a start, one of those screens states clearly that the app is free, although you would expect the app to be data-hungry. These streaming TV apps always are.

Once you've got the free app, you'll be able to search for programmes listed in categories, as well being able to browse ‘Featured’ shows or shows based on anything you have previously watched. Other than that, it's a little vague, although the presumption is a mix of different TV networks and the option to download shows so you can watch later, when you have no data connection (on a plane for example). You should be able to stream live TV too.

The app is said to be launching first in Finland, showcasing content from local TV stations MTV3, Nelopen and YLE. If it follows in the UK, it would mean Microsoft / Nokia doing a deal with UK networks and their streaming services – BBC iPlayer, ITV player, 4OD and Demand 5 for example. Indeed, that deal might already have been done.

Time will tell. When we get UK details confirmed, you'll be the first to know.
