Nokia confirms incoming tablet

The rumours have been swirling round, but now it looks like Nokia has effectively confirmed the development of its very own tablet.

That confirmation was by a man close to it, Nokia's design chief Marko Ahtisaari. Speaking to Finnish magazine Kauppalehti Optio, he said 'we are working on it', when asked about the existence of the product. That's good enough for us.

The company has hinted about a tablet's development in the past, with Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop previously describing it as category is interesting for the Finnish company, but also stressing the need for a different approach to numerous rivals trying to battle against the dominance of Apple's iPad. So no iPad clone then.

What is heavily-rumoured is a 10-inch Windows 8 tablet, which will use Qualcomm's dual-core platform for its processing power. As for the launch date, that's likely to be in the fourth quarter of 2012, perhaps linked in to the launch of Windows 8.

More on this as and when it breaks. We suspect spy shots will be doing the rounds in a matter of weeks.
