Nokia to launch Windows 8 tablet

It isn't just Google that's gunning for the iPad, Nokia has a tablet on the horizon too.

That's according to a report in Digitimes, which has received reports from 'upstream component suppliers'. Or in other words, the people making the parts for the tablet. Those reports indicate a 10-inch Windows 8 tablet, which will use Qualcomm's dual-core platform for its processing power.

Nokia is said to have outsourced manufacturing duties to Compal Electronics, with the first batch of shipments to top 200,000 units. That might not sound like many, but Nokia is probably right to be cautious. With the iPad dominant, a Google tablet coming soon and the Amazon Kindle Fire making inroads into the budget market, a Nokia tablet could have a battle on its hands for sales.

If you want to know more about Windows 8 (aka Apollo), you can find out more here. It looks to be a considerable step up from the current Windows platform. Microsoft has been coy about a release date for it, but with the Nokia tablet running it set to be released in the fourth quarter of 2012, that does nail it down somewhat. No 'spy' shots as yet, but they will, almost certainly, appear well in advance of the official launch. When we see them, we'll make sure you do too.
