Samsung Galaxy S II ICS update coming soon

OK, it wasn't quite the 1 March date that was rumoured, but it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S II could be getting Ice Cream Sandwich imminently.

The Android upgrade could be rolling out from 15 March, according to Samsung's Facebook page in Israel. It was always said to be rolling out in the first quarter of 2012, but no specific date was ever forthcoming from the company. Until now that is.

We're not pretending to be fluent in Hebrew, but those who are say that the statement confirms that 15 March date for a rollout commencing for both Sim-free purchasers and those who went via a mobile network. In short, it's coming to all in Israel – and in just over a week.

So what of the rest of us? Well so far, Samsung hasn't made this particular statement in any other country. But if the update is good enough to go out in one country, presumably it's good to go everywhere. So look out for a UK statement very soon.

That is, of course, if you happen to have an unlocked phone. Unless the networks have been doing a lot of testing on the quiet, there is likely to be a waiting period for contract users, as those networks make sure there's no obvious bugs before allowing a rollout. You can probably add a month or so in for that.

But even allowing for that, you might still have Ice Cream Sandwich running on your phone before the Galaxy S III launches. That's got to be a good thing.
