Asus reveals Padfone and Eee Pad Memo
27 Feb 2012
Android powers new phone that fits inside a tablet, plus seven-inch 3D tablet
Innovation aplenty at Asus HQ, as chairman Jonny Shih officially unveiled its Padfone and a 3D tablet that displays in that glorious third dimension glasses-free.
The Padfone is no stranger to the tech speculation, having been officially announced back in May. It’s an Android-running smartphone packing a new dual-core Snapdragon processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen in a 9.2mm thin chassis and an eight-megapixel camera with matching VGA front-facer.
All that slots perfectly into a ‘dumb’ tablet display so that the its innards power that larger screen. Think Motorola’s Atrix and its Lapdock-friendly handsets: small device with super power fuelling a bigger screen. But it doesn't stop there – Asus is also selling matching keyboard docks so you can plug your phone into the tablet and then into the keyboard for a build-it-yourself bona fide laptop. Each dock also adds a few more hours of battery life, and to top it off, it comes with a capacitive stylus that doubles as a headset.
The Eee Pad Memo is another Android tablet joinng Asus’s lineup of underdog slates – Transformer Prime, Transformer and and the Eee Slate. This seven-inch tab runs on Ice Cream Sandwich and supports a capacitive stylus for note taking when it’s in portrait orientation and more futuristically, has a glasses-free 3D display for all that 3D content we guess you’ll be downloading if you get this tab.
Price and availability haven't been announced. We’ll have pictures and hands-on previews soon.
