Ice Cream Sandwich beta heads to Sony Ericsson phones

Good news that Ice Cream Sandwich is now available for selected Sony Ericsson phones, but we would urge you to think twice before installing it for your phone.

Why? Well, it's a beta version of the Android OS update for the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Ray and Xperia Neo V. Sony is offering it, but via its developer site, warning that the update should only be attempted if you're an 'advanced developer'. That's essentially because the code isn't final, so could cause the odd glitch.

With that in mind, you'll need to unlock your Sony Ericsson phone's bootloader if you want to install the beta version. However, doing this 'may void the warranty of your phone and/or any warranty from your operator'. Like we said, think very carefully before doing it. More information on that can be found here.

But if you are tech-savvy, you do get an insight into the latest incarnation of Android before the masses, which is serious bragging territory. If you don't feel all that confident about using a not-quite-finished upgrade, the official rollout of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Ray and Xperia Neo V starts at 'end March/early April', with other Xperia mobiles released last year to follow at the end of April to the beginning of May.
