APP WATCH: Bing Vision now available on UK smartphones

It's been available in the US since the middle of last year, but now Bing Vision is available in the UK, ready to take aim at barcodes. Well, some of them anyway.

The idea is that you scan barcodes with your Windows Phone, which then finds you the best price or deal online or locally. Not all barcodes though, with the service aimed at media, such as CDs, books and DVDs. Just point your camera at the barcode and get shopping. There’s also a translation feature too, should you be struggling with a menu in a foreign country or indeed, any kind of literature. Ok, it's not quite up there with Google Goggles yet, but it's certainly getting there and as a free update, it should be a welcome addition to your Windows smartphone.

Talking of additions, there's another one incoming too – Bing Image Matching for Newspapers. That's said to be due in March as an update to the Bing Vision service. This uses the phone's camera to take a photo of an article or news piece, which in turn will link you up directly with the online version. At least, it will if the article is features on one of 3,000 publications worldwide.

As we said, that's an add-on to Vision, so another reason to go and get that. If you have a Nokia Lumia 800 or HTC Titan, plug your phone into your computer and install the service via Zune for Windows or Windows Phone 7 Connector if you’re using a Mac.
