HTC to launch PlayStation-certified devices

We could be about to see PlayStation-certified devices made by manufacturers other than Sony Ericsson, according to reports.

Pocket-lint claims Sony's own Xperia Play will soon have some competition from HTC, with that company possibly announcing the move as soon as this month at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona.

The PlayStation certified platform was always intended to be pushed out to other companies, but takers have been thin on the ground so far, despite Sony confirming discussions with third parties since 2011. Indeed, Kaz Hirai, executive deputy president of Sony, said as much last year: 'It is not the case where we want to keep it in the Sony family. We are in discussions with non-Sony makers. This is not just for Sony devices.'

It now looks like HTC has taken the jump as it looks to boost gaming on its smartphone portfolio, something the company hasn't really pushed in the past (aside from access to gaming apps, of course). The announcement might be soon, but the PlayStation-friendly phones are still a little while off. The second half of 2012 at least, although the company has so far refused to comment.
