Phones 4u has just launched a new JUMP (‘Just Upgrade My Phone') contract, which allows consumers to upgrade their mobile phone every six months, from a selection of the latest smartphones (currently including the Apple iPhone 4S).
Instead of offering a single contract, JUMP customers will get two – a standard one with the provider for minutes, text and data, and an extra one with Phones 4u for the phone. Upgrade handsets are guaranteed by Phones 4u to be worth at least £100 for the first 12 months and both contracts are minimum 24 months.
Here comes the maths bit
The costing is a little complicated for a Friday morning, but let's struggle through it together. Say you take out a JUMP contract today, bagging yourself an Android phone. You choose an Orange tariff, which would cost you £35 per month by itself, but costs you £38 per month on JUMP. So far, so simple.
However, after six months you want to follow the herd and upgrade to an iPhone 4S. This is where the maths starts to hurt our brains.
You need to take the outstanding JUMP contract balance, subtract the trade-in value of your Android phone, then split that over the remaining 18 months and add to the monthly cost of the iPhone 4S to get your new JUMP contract cost. Then add that figure to your new tariff cost to get a sum monthly cost. Still with us? No? It's okay, here's a picture of a squirrel water skiing.
To simplify things, that £38 monthly cost would jack up to £58 per month for the remaining 18 months, giving an overall increase of £360. The 16GB iPhone 4S still costs £500 from Apple, so it's a worthwhile investment if you absolutely have to have the latest handset.
JUMP is available from every Phones 4u store as well as the Phones 4u website. We're hoping the ad campaign will feature either House Of Pain or Kris Kross.
