iPad 3 launch event in March?

OK, the initial rumours were wrong. The iPad 3 will not launch in February. But the new iPad should still be here in March, if the latest rumour is to be believed.

That rumour comes from Japanese blog Macotakara, which apparently has a 'satisfying accuracy score' when it comes to Apple rumours. That site is now saying that an Apple media event is scheduled for early March, which isn't far off last year's iPad date (2 March, if you've forgotten). The date confusion was because Apple was planning another event in February, although it's not clear what this event will be for. But it's not for new product, that's for sure.

The March launch doesn't really change anything to be honest. Previous reports have indicated that production of the iPad 3 would hit 'full volumes' by February and the shelf date of mid-March for the US and later that month for the UK still seems likely. Although the specification of the new device is still something of a mystery.

Current thinking is a tablet with an ultra high-resolution display, quad-core processor and LTE functionality, not that the last of those things will be much use to us UK customers. There's also a strong possibility of the next version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 5.1, making an appearance too. It would make sense.

Not long to wait until we find out. Four weeks and counting...
