Apple brings its recycling to the UK

If you watch enough daytime TV, you'll know there are plenty of companies out there willing to take your old mobile devices off your hands, in return for a cash sum. Apple is now one of them in the UK.

The Reuse and Recycling Programme is now in the UK, run by Dataserv GmbH. It offers you cash or some 'eco' peace of mind if you want to get rid of an old Mac, or more significantly for us, an old iPhone or iPad. Good news in these tough times, especially if you like to keep up with what's new.

According to the website: 'Apple's commitment to the environment includes finding the most efficient ways to reuse or recycle electronic equipment at the end of its useful life, including iPhone, iPad, Mac or PC computers, and displays from any manufacturer. You may even get some money for your old equipment.'

'Whether it's an iPhone, iPad, Mac or PC computer, working or not, we'll take it and determine if it qualifies for reuse and has a monetary value. If it does, the amount will be credited directly into your bank account. If it doesn't, you can recycle it responsibly through one of our free recycling programmes.'

So no guarantee of money and no definite price until you've waved goodbye to your device. Saying that, you can visit the website and answer a few questions about the device you wish to recycle. You'll then get an estimate of its value from Dataserv, who will send you a prepaid shipping label to seal the deal. If that estimate (and your original answers) ring true, the money will be paid into your account.

As we said, other companies also offer a similar service for working mobiles, so it probably pays to virtually shop around. You can get the Apple service details here.
