iPad 3 now in production, claims source

Confused about the next iPad? Join the club. But this latest rumour comes from the Bloomberg network, quoting people 'familiar with the product' too. So it might well carry more truth than usual.

if its sources are correct, the next iPad, being called the iPad 3 here, is already in production and has been for much of this month, with 'full volumes' in February and an official shelf date of March. So not long to wait, if these rumours are correct.

The changes aren't likely to be obvious unless you actually use the tablet. According to Bloomberg, the headline changes are a faster processor, a high definition screen and compatibility with LTE networks. Don't worry about that last one, as the next-gen mobile networks aren't going to be commonplace in the UK for some time yet. The other things are worth noting.

The new processor will be of the quad-core variety, an enhancement said to allow users to 'jump more quickly' between applications. The enhanced screen is a common rumour and almost certain to come to fruition. That's said to have a greater resolution than the current iPad, with more pixels on its screen than some high definition televisions, according to one of those sources. The pixels are small enough to make the images 'look like printed material'. Additionally, videos 'begin playing almost instantly' because of the additional graphics processing.

All logical stuff and tying in a little with rumours of an iPad 2S or 2HD from last week. However, the name here is the iPad 3 – and we're inclined to believe it.
