Samsung beats Apple as top-selling manufacturer

Samsung is now the world's top selling smartphone manufacturer, beating Apple to the number one spot with profits expected to be 73% higher than a year ago.

Though Samsung's Galaxy S II was the second best selling smartphone in the runup to Christmas after Apple's iPhone 4S, the Korean giant overtook the Mac maker in overall sales in the second half of 2011, thanks to runaway success of the Galaxy S II and mid-range Android devices like the Galaxy Ace.

The BBC reported that the firm was projecting profits of 5.2 trillion won (£2.9 billion), with analysts predicting that Samsung's profits would grow by another five trillion won in 2012.
